Kyhlwood Farm is owned and operated by Jenna Kyhl.
When I was growing up in Parkersburg it always frustrated me that there was nowhere in the area to receive a well rounded horse education. I not only wanted instruction in the saddle but also to learn about horses in general. I have opened Kyhlwood Farm to fill that void and provide children of all ages and levels (as well as adults) the place and opportunity to learn about horses and riding in a safe and fun environment.
My Riding History:
I started riding when I was 3 in Colorado. I showed saddle seat in the Morgan Grand Nationals and World Show when I was 6. Soon after I began riding hunt seat and jumping. Upon moving to Iowa at the age of 10 I began learning to ride western. This rounded out my hunger for general horse knowledge as well. By being a member of a local 4-H group I learned about horsemanship and showing from the older members as well as several different instructors that I tried out in the area. I showed on many different circuits including BHCSC and NEISCA.
I began showing AQHA in 2002 with the guidance of my trainer Jennifer Sonne and one of my mentors Tena Alcini (owner of superior western pleasure horse and world champion sire Ovations Only). Over the course of time that I trained with Jennifer and I was able to ride several world and congress champions. I also gained the experience of starting horses correctly without using force or fear.
In 2004 I joined the equestrian team at Illinois Wesleyan University. I think showing IHSA has enabled me to read horses better than I ever could before. This is due to the fact that you don't show your own horse in IHSA, you are required to draw the name of a horse you have never ridden and show without any warm-up time. In 2007 I qualified for Zones, Regionals and was 1 point off from qualifying for Nationals. I was also the High Point Rider for the Regionals show.
During the years that I was showing with the equestrian team I was also a riding instructor at a residential camp in New York. I was the assistant Horse Director in 2005, Horse Director in 2006 and 2007, and the over all Camp Program Director in 2008. I very much enjoyed the experience of teaching so many ages and levels. I believe it gave me a strong base from which to teach.
Currently I am training a 5 year old daughter of Promote this Chip called Margaretta Ville to be my personal western pleasure horse. I am also training my 3 year old gelding, Shut Up N Kiss Me, for hunter under saddle. I always have a few other 'project horses' that I am working with that are for sale that can be found on the Horses For Sale page.
Other than training I have a strong passion for teaching. I teach English, western, jumping and general horsemanship. Whether the student is interested in showing at high levels, showing locally or just going out for trail rides I believe that a strong foundation is the key to safety, success and fun.
